Environmental Noise Filter
Our environmental noise filter is our “external stimuli filtering layer” just before data “enters” our conscious level of awareness, which can also be termed as the awareness level of pre-consciousness and initiator of paying attention. Our environmental noise filter - sourcing mainly from our unconscious mind1) - is essential for our protection, to ensure our survival and well-being.
The purpose of our environmental noise filter is to constantly monitorplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigMonitor
To or monitoring imply observing and checking the progress standard and quality of ...something over a period of time and keeping it under systematic review through observations, checking and keeping a continuous record by deploying the monitoring cycle.
Therefore, to assess, evaluate and monitor and scan our environment - even when we are asleep - and filter environmental “noise” (i.e. all the stimuli collected by our sensesplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigSenses
We often take our for granted and seldom - if ever - think about the tremendous impact that our have on our efficiency to deal with our environments (both our internal and external worlds). Our are the “conduit” through which we relate to and interact with our surroundings. Apart from this, our ) to identify and determine possible threats to our well-being. Thus, our environmental noise filter quickly process and prioritize information and “decide” - using the basic fight, flight or freeze mechanism, integrated with our umwelt - as cues to “select” the most efficient way to deal with the “noise”…
- When our environmental “noise” signifies “ dangerplugin-autotooltip__small plugin-autotooltip_bigRegardless whether "experienced" danger is either real or perceived!” and demands immediate action as referenced from a life script - or our belief system, or a sabotage program - the appropriate action model is evoked and initiated to swiftly “deal with the threat”.
- If the “noise” isn't life-threatening, but requires our immediate attention, the information is then “passed” on, or channelled to our conscious mind for further action, handling and processing.
- When the “noise” isn't threatening nor important enough to warrant our immediate attention, it is “noted” and “kept” on “radar” to continue monitoring the situation for possible harmful changes that might unfold.
Although being a much more complex, vibrant and dynamic system, our environmental noise filter functions can - in principle - be compared to the air traffic controlling and radar systems at airports. This comparison provides us some idea of how our environmental noise filter operates to maintain a productive and harmonious environmental fit, identify and deal with possible threatening or harmful events. Apart from substituting aeroplanes with “environmental noise”, the other major difference - between our environmental noise filter and an airport's radar system - is that our environmental noise filter's identification, comparison, evaluation and decision reaction time is unbelievably fast and huge amounts of data can easily be processed, digested and responded to in a nanosecond.
Our environmental noise filter is our greatest asset… providing that our psyche (i.e. our inner world4)) is in a healthy balanced and equilibrium. However, when this is not the case, our environmental noise filter becomes our greatest adversary (i.e. we become our own worst enemy) that - especially when triggered by dramatization which evoke the domino effect - frequently surface in our attitudes, daily actions and behaviours as “traps of life”, actively maintained by “psyche barriers” and consistently derailing us into following a Wild Horse instead of pursuing an Oryx lifestyle.
Environmental data and information are collected by our Environmental Noise Filter, channelled via our environmental noise filter, which - based on our combined beliefs, values, experiences and knowledge - then “decide” on initiating an appropriate line of action. Once, the decision is taken and acted upon, the filtered information - generally the source of our blindness - is then passed on to our conscious for further attention, processing, digestion, choices and ultimately effective decision making. Thus, our environmental noise filter actually directs and channel our attention5) and subsequent actions, which - depending on context - can be our greatest ally or worst enemy depending primarily on how focused and mindful we are about what we are paying attention to.
Our unconscious (i.e. the body in collaboration with our environmental noise filter) interact with and interpret6) the environment and such interpretations subconsciously establish a mood and perspective that result in conscious thoughts and feelings7) that determine how we deal with the reality in which we currently find ourselves.
In the 30+ odd years that I have practised as a psychologist, career- and life coach, there is one particular aspect of human behaviour that I found quite mystifying. People does dumb things (myself included), but - rather naivelyphenomenonawesomeidiotic-stem reticular formation which performs a crucial role in maintaining behavioural arousal, consciousness and motivation.
