Plutchik’s Wheel of Feelings

Plutchik’s Wheel of EmotionsPRIMARY: The eight segments of the wheel indicate that there are eight key feelings….

  1. Anger
  2. Anticipation
  3. Joy
  4. Trust
  5. Fear
  6. Surprise
  7. Sadness
  8. Disgust

OPPOSITES: Each key feeling has a polar opposite, so that…

  1. Anger is the opposite of Fear.
  2. Anticipation is the opposite of Surprise.
  3. Joy is the opposite of Sadness.
  4. Trust is the opposite of Disgust.

COMBINATIONS: The feelings with no color, represent a feeling that is a mix of the two key adjacent feelings…

INTENSITY: The segments vertical dimension represents intensity – feelings intensify as they move from the outside to the center of the wheel - which is indicated by its color shading. The darker the shade of a color, the more intense the key feeling is experienced…

  1. Anger at its least level of intensity is Annoyance. At its highest level of intensity, Anger becomes Rage.
  2. Anticipation at its least level of intensity is Interest. At its highest level of intensity, Anticipation becomes Vigilance.

Feelings are often quite complex, and being able to recognize when a feeling is actually a combination of two or more key feelings, is a helpful and supportive ability to have, especially with regards to emotional maturity mastery.
